TECHConnection at FRA: Making computers more accessible

In an effort to make computers more accessible to those with difficulties and impairments, Family Resource Associates of Shrewsbury has been named a
Microsoft Accessibility Resource Center.

As one of only 26 MARC designees nationwide, FRA’s TECHConnection is equipped with new video demonstrations and accessibility tutorials that show how to make computing easier, more convenient, and more comfortable. TECHConnection experts are on hand to answer questions and help visitors learn how to adjust their computer to fit their needs. Microsoft Accessibility Resource CDs are also available - free - to take home.

"The goal of the TECHConnection has always been to provide a place for people with challenges, to learn about what new technology is available and to help them find affordable solutions.  In our non-commercial setting they are able to learn about it and try it out before they buy anything. With our collaboration with Microsoft, people can come in to learn about the accessibility features that are built right into their computer!  These built in features can be a free solution for many people", said Joanne Castellano, director of the TECHConnection.

"Our goal is to work with technology centers across North America to increase awareness of accessible technology solutions that are available on today's computers ¾ through this collaboration, we can support the great work these centers are already doing in their local communities," said LaDeana Huyler, manager of the MARC program, a product planner in Microsoft’s Accessible Technology Group.

A recent study conducted by Forrester Research, Inc. and commissioned by Microsoft, found that 57 percent of working-age Americans could benefit from accessible technology due to difficulties and impairments such as reduced eyesight, wrist or arm discomfort, and hearing loss.

TECHConnection at FRA will make the accessibility tutorial and video available during its Open Lab Time. Anyone who has difficulty using a standard computer, keyboard or mouse will be able to view the video and learn about the latest accessibility features – including altering the computer’s screen contrast for easier reading and changing the behavior and size of the cursor.

TECHConnection at FRA offers many affordable computer workshops and classes for various ages and abilities throughout the year. Contact TECHConnection at 732-747-5310 or visit www.techconnection.org.

Family Resource Associates and its TECHConnection program offer many services to children and teens with disabilities and their families, since 1979. In addition, infant intervention services, family support and sibling groups, newsletters and a wonderful recreation program, “Our Chance to Dance” are available for the community.
