S127, 131 BAILEY'S BOOK HOUSE

Seven activities help develop beginning literacy skills. Bailey and his friends inspire early readers to learn letters, words and word families, rhyming, prepositions, adjectives, and storytelling. Make your own greeting cards and storybooks too! A special highlighting technique encourages kids to follow words as they hear them read aloud.

S54 BUILDABILITY: SWITCH ACCESSIBLE

With this program you can create stories with sound, text, music, colors, movies, and action. Have you ever seen a flipbook? These are books containing pages of pictures. Each picture is a different image of some action, like a person waving or a horse running. The picture pages are arranged in the order of the action, like the frames of a movie. When you flip through the pages of the book, you see the action—the horse runs or the person waves. BuildAbility works in much the same way, letting you build the pages of your moving story, then animating the result. A BuildAbility story contains pages, composed of one or more elements. Pages are nothing more than a sequence of elements. BuildAbility stores elements and pages in order. That’s what lets BuildAbiltiy capture your ideas and put them in motion, exactly as you created.

S55, 56 READING FOR MEANING

Based on a research-validated instructional model, Reading for Meaning targets reading comprehension. Through explicit modeling and guided practice, students develop skills in five key areas: main idea, inference, sequence, cause & effect, and compare & contrast.

Huck appreciates their efforts, but finds civilized life confining. In the beginning of the story, Tom Sawyer appears briefly, helping Huck escape at night from the house, past Miss Watson's slave, Jim. They meet up with Tom Sawyer's self-proclaimed gang, who plot to carry out adventurous crimes. Life is changed by the sudden appearance of Huck's shiftless father "Pap," an abusive parent and drunkard. Although Huck is successful in preventing his Pap from acquiring his fortune, Pap forcibly gains custody of Huck and the two move to the backwoods where Huck is kept locked inside his father's cabin. Equally dissatisfied with life with his father, Huck escapes from the cabin, elaborately fakes his own death, and sets off down the Mississippi River.

S147 START TO FINISH: THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER

Mark Twain captures a boyhood summer on the Mississippi River, complete with haunted houses, rogue bandits, hidden treasure and schoolyard crushes. It is a simple, rural, dreamlike world, seen through the eyes of a boy who may have been based on the young Mark Twain himself. Tom Sawyer is an adventuresome prankster whose good-hearted and unpretentious nature is infectious and timelessly appealing. Even at the darkest moments in the story, affection and wit permeate the pages of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Twain succeeds not only in entertaining children but also in reminding adults of what we once were as children.

This brief retelling of one of America’s favorite novels captures Mark Twain’s humor and humanity while keeping the language simple and easy to understand.

S148 START TO FINISH: BLACK BEAUTY

Told from the perspective of a horse, Black Beauty illustrates the many ways horses were mistreated in nineteenth century England.

Handsome and well-bred, Black Beauty's first position is pulling a carriage at a fancy estate. This means having to wear a bearing rein, a fashionable contraption that holds the horses’ heads up so unnaturally high that many horses are only good for a few years of work before their backs give out. Black Beauty is ultimately ruined by a drunk driver, which condemns Beauty to forms of work farther and farther below his breeding.

Black Beauty, a mild and humble narrator, quietly condemns all forms of animal cruelty in his elegant recounting of his adventures. But this story is also a lesson in the simple value of kindness, for Black Beauty’s journey ends in peace.
