Congratulations to Stephanie
Bean, The Junior League of Monmouth County received 30 applications from high school seniors for the 2005 Outstanding Volunteerism Service Scholarship and awarded two $1,000 scholarships, one of which went to FRA's own Stephanie Bean of Colts Neck. Stephanie is a graduate of Red Bank Catholic High School. In the Fall, she will attend Georgetown University where she plans to pursue a degree in either Biochemistry or Chemical Engineering. As a result of her volunteer work with disabled children, Stephanie hopes to attend medical school to become a pediatric neurologist. Stephanie began volunteering in seventh grade. When a close friend of her mother was in need of volunteers to help with “Our Chance to Dance” a program of the Family Resource Associates in Shrewsbury, Stephanie offered to help. Every Saturday morning, Stephanie attended dance classes at which she assisted these children and adults in movement exercises, monitoring their behavior and health and interacting with them in ways that foster positive growth. Since 1999, every Saturday morning October through May, Stephanie has volunteered a total of 538 hours to “Our Chance to Dance.” In the summer of 2002, Stephanie volunteered at Colleen’s Place, a summer camp offered through FRA. She was assigned to care for one or two children, including feeding them, taking care of personal needs, playing and interacting with them and assisting during their various sessions with different therapists. At Red Bank Catholic High School, Stephanie was a member of a service organization called, LIFE—Living in Faith Effectively. As the Executive Board Secretary of the RBC Chapter of Future Business Leaders of America, Stephanie organized and participated in several community service projects. Her last project was for the benefit of soldiers in Iraq. Stephanie coordinated a bake sale, which raised over $300. She collected 300 letters and 200 beanie babies. Together with food and cosmetics, care packages will be sent to U.S. military personnel. Within the town of Colts Neck, Stephanie has volunteered as well. In the summer of 2003, Stephanie was a teacher’s assistant at St. Mary’s Vacation Bible School and she has volunteered for the Colts Neck Lions Club at their annual Halloween Pancake Breakfast. Her extracurricular activities at RBC included: contributor, Literary magazine, Juror, Mock Trial, Casey Ambassador, Physics Competition Club, Scrapbooking Club, Spanish Club, math tutor, Student Council, Junior Varsity and Varsity Tennis, including serving as team co-captain. Stephanie currently works as a receptionist. She has also worked at the Colts Neck Library as a summer intern and page and at SCORE Learning Centers. She helps her parents with the yard work, baby sits her younger brother, cooks dinner once a week and even has time to tend to her own garden. |
