  • Basic computer skills will be taught during each class activity.

    Staffing: Classes are taught by Special Educators and Assistive Technology Specialists and offer a variety of activities for every session!

    TIME and DURATION:
    AM Session: 10:00 -12:00
    Lunch: 12:00 – 1:00
    PM Session: 1:00 – 3:00

    Morning and afternoon sessions are available each day, Monday - Friday.
    Classes will run in 12 weekly sessions: Fall, Winter & Spring.

    $520 - AM Class
    $240 - Life Skills Lunch
    $520 - PM Class
    $1,300 - Full Day

    CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

    AFTER CARE RECREATION PROGRAM - Aftercare will be available from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Monday, Wednesday & Thursday. Students will have opportunities to play Wii, watch a movie, listen to music and dance.

    AMAZING STORIES - This 2-part program provides opportunities to strengthen reading and writing skills. In part 1 learn to use electronic books to read a story or have a story read to you. Share your favorite parts of the story with classmates and learn to identify character, setting and plot. Many books are available based on reading level and interest. Part II reviews basic grammar and sentence structure and offers simple creative writing activities.

    GAMES TO PLAY - Enjoy exciting computer games. Play many fun word games in a group or alone and enjoy it at your own pace. Build vocabulary, eye-hand coordination and memory skills. Try your skills by playing fun games such as pool, racing and bowling. Learn to play against the computer as well.

    LET'S GO SURFING - Learn how to find things and stay safe on the internet. Use different sites for games, music and research.

    LIFE (Learning Independence For Everyday)SATURDAY CLASS -

  • Drama Classes - To enrich language skills, following directions and creativity in real life situations. Activities include role playing for increased language and independence.
  • Art Activity - Working on fine motor coordination through a variety of creative and fun projects.
  • Computer Classes - Enjoy exciting computer activities to increase computer skills and learning. Working at their own pace, students will use the computer to practice keyboarding, word processing, creative writing and exploring the Internet. Supplemental academic software will be utilized to develop spelling, organization, keyboarding and money skills. Adapted input devices are available for students who do not use the standard keyboard or mouse.
  • Cooking - Learning life skills such as food preparation, menu planning and item cost. Students will utilize the microwave and toaster oven to prepare dinner meals. Learning how to follow cooking directions and understanding item cost for purchasing.
  • Fall Session, Winter Session, Spring Session

    LIFE SKILLS LUNCH - Students will learn to make lunch. Focus will be on independent food preparation that they can make at home and nutrition. Students will plan lunch menus for the class. Students will learn independence at the microwave and toaster oven. Cost of food is included.

    MONEY & MORE - Using computer programs, board games and functional activities, this program works with basic money skills; coin identification, making change and making a simple budget. Additional topics covered include telling time and reading schedules , as well as simple forms of solid and liquid measurement (feet, inches, pints and quarts, etc.)

    PICTURE THIS - Learn how to scan your favorite pictures into the computer and create family photo calendars, scrapbooks or greeting cards. Learn how to use a digital camera. Find the many ways photos can be stored and shared, use on-line albums and print them out for special projects.

    PLACES TO GO & PEOPLE TO MEET - Travel the world and see sights on the internet. Learn about different countries, cultures, music and food. Create a passport memory album and recipe book from your travels.

    SELF AWARENESS (Yoga) - Develop relaxation, balance, focus, stretching and gentle exercise in this class. Instructors are Certified Yoga Instructors from Blue Moon Yoga facility.

    SELF EXPRESSION - Find your inner creativity. Develop a product for gift giving or for selling. Different computer & art mediums used to create a product; determine it's worth and value, learn to package for presentation and related money skills taught for small home business and money skills. The students' goal is to produce a product (i.e. photo calendars, greeting cards, note paper, picture frames, etc.) Students will also learn how to package products.

    STEP (Socialization-Technology-Education-Program) -
    HELD AT BOYS & GIRLS CLUB, ASBURY PARK, NJ
    Description: Join us for a day of independent opportunities for adults with special needs to enjoy time within the community in various areas of the Boys & Girls Club in Asbury Park. Special Educators will provide programming to strengthen independence, maintain and develop real life skills using the computer and build social skills. Activities include:

  • Computer Class to encourage functional Internet skills improving independent thinking skills, typing skills, reading, writing, etc.
  • Discussion of current events through review of current news items found on the Internet
  • Game room and gym to learn games with peers and rules of play, eye-hand coordination and direction following. Interaction with BGC Mentor group to increase social skills
  • Library time- explore new interests, read books of interest to share with group
  • Swimming and water exercises for health and recreation in Olympic size pool
  • Social lunch (bring your own lunch) in their cafeteria
  • Conversational dialogue and life skills communication will take place throughout the day within this setting, for functional community living aspect as well as issues on bullying, race relations and sportsmanship qualities.
  • Students will be responsible to bring their own lunch, however, we encourage students to bring money to purchase drinks or snacks via vending machines to work on money skills.
    Skill Requirements:

  • Can transition from one task to another easily
  • Can follow direction independently.
  • Can maneuver through the Boys & Girls Club with minimal assistance (students will have community interaction as they transition from activities.)
  • Can dress independently
  • No wandering or behavior challenges

    THE SOCIAL SCENE – Using highly relevant scenes from some of the best action, sci-fi, comedy and animated films ever made, students will begin thinking and talking about values like honesty, responsibility, cooperation, kindness and empathy.
    Goal and Objective: To increase students social awareness, social appropriateness and language skills.
