AAC Evaluations
Evaluations for Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC)
Everyone needs a method of communication in order to interact with others and to expand their learning opportunities. Those who are unable to communicate or whose speech is not fluent or understandable enough for others, may benefit from using a communication device. Communication devices include such things as picture / symbol systems, communication boards, electronic devices, speech synthesizers and speech output software. The use of these devices is a process of learning that takes time to gain skills, confidence and ease of use.
The TECHConnection offers an extensive variety of speech training software and communication devices. Many major devices are available for preview and for us to use for evaluations. Find out which alternative is right for you. Follow-up training is available. Device programming and updating is offered to expand its use as the individual progresses.
Evaluations are available for preschoolers through adults to help give a voice to their thoughts. Families, teachers, therapists and agency staff are welcome to be a part of this process.

Evaluation

Speech production
Receptive and expressive language skills
Symbolic performance
Cognitive-language abilities
Physical abilities
Visual abilities
Environmental considerations
Evaluators use the information obtained from the assessment to assist in the selection an AAC device (if indicated) or to provide intervention goals and strategies to support the user in acquiring the skills needed to effectively use a device in the future. TECHConnection Staff recognizes the importance of receiving input and collaborating with the individual's family members, care providers, school staff, private therapists and other relevant professionals and encourages participation or input from as many of these key individuals as possible. AAC Evaluation Services are provided by a NJ Licensed and ASHA Certified Speech-Language Pathologist.
Training
When a high-tech communication device, sometimes referred to as a Speech Generating Device (SGD), is recommended a period of short-term training to teach device operation and promote functional use of the device is often key to facilitating functional and effective device use. TECHConnection provides these services on a fee-for-service basis. In addition consultative services are also available to schools and referring agencies.
Scheduling an AAC Evaluation
In order to schedule an AAC evaluation the family, referring agency or school must first provide (1) requisite financial information, (2) an Intake Form and (3) send all support documentation as specified on the appropriate Intake Form. The Pediatric Intake From is appropriate for individuals from 2 1/2 - 21, while the Adult Intake Form is appropriate for all individuals over 21 who are no longer enrolled in an educational program. Appointments are scheduled only after all required information has been received by TECHConnection.
