AAC Technology can enable children with Autism to communicate their needs and wants and to develop social communication skills. To achieve these outcomes, the selected system must be appropriately matched to the student's symbolic skills and cognitive/language abilities. In this workshop participants will (a) learn to identify candidates for AAC evaluations that may lead to high-tech options; (b) develop an understanding of the requisite symbolic and language skills needed to use an AAC device and (c) establish a variety of syntactic and pragmatic language goals that may move a child beyond "I want...".

BY ATTENDING THIS SEMINAR, PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Identify baseline skills needed for referral for an AAC evaluation.

  • Describe high, low and no tech AAC system considerations that lead to successful device use .

  • Develop syntactic and pragmatic language goals that can expand a child’s expressive language abilities.
  • * Dr. Joan Bruno is the AAC Specialist at TECHConnection. She has over 25 years of experience working in the field of AAC.
